Update 20.10.2022
The ICAR Congress, General Assembly and Assembly of Delegates took place from the 12-15 October 2022 in the beautiful region of Montreux in Switzerland.
The Congress was preceeded by the 7th International Hypothermia Day in Lausanne. Prof. Beat Walpoth, Dr Mathieu Pasquier and Dr Evelien Cools organised an extraordinary meeting which was frequented by many international experts on hypothermia and avalanche medicine.
Presented at the International Hypothermia Day and finalised at the ICAR Congress were updates on the Avalanche Algorithms which will be published here in due course.
Both live events were a true success and a lot of work was carried out and planned for the months to come.
We thank all delegates for their tremendous contributions and are looking forward to the next meeting.
The ICAR Congress 2023 will be taking place in Toblach in South Tyrol (IT).
Reports from the congress are listed here:
Update March 2023
The ICAR MedCom Avalanche Guidelines have been revisited and a new revised recommendation has been published:
M Pasquier et al
Introduction
The International Commission for Mountain Emergency Medicine (ICAR MedCom) developed updated recommendations for the management of avalanche victims.
Methods
ICAR MedCom created Population Intervention Comparator Outcome (PICO) questions and conducted a scoping review of the literature. We evaluated and graded the evidence using the American College of Chest Physicians system.
Results
We included 120 studies including original data in the qualitative synthesis. There were 45 retrospective studies (38%), 44 case reports or case series (37%), and 18 prospective studies on volunteers (15%). The main cause of death from avalanche burial was asphyxia (range of all studies 65–100%). Trauma was the second most common cause of death (5–29%). Hypothermia accounted for few deaths (0–4%).
The Recommendation ist available as an Open Access Article on the Journal's website.
